The Paediatric Cardiac Society of South Africa is a voluntary professional association of paediatric cardiologists and cardiac surgeons with an interest in children with heart disease. The objectives of the Society are to improve the quality of care for children with congenital and acquired heart disease by promoting research and supporting education and training of heart specialists. The PCSSA is also the primary advocacy group for children with heart disease in South Africa.
Although many of our members are in independent practice, the university or academic departments of Paediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery are the foundation stones on which our Society rests and from which it derives its strength. These institutions are as follows;
The Witwatersrand University at Johannesburg General and Chris Hani - Baragwaneth Hospital’s
The University of Pretoria and Pretoria Academic Hospital
The University of Kwazulu Natal and Chief Albert Luthuli Hospital
The University of Free State and Unitas Hospital
Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg Hospital
The University of Cape Town and Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital
Membership is open and is not restricted to South Africa or South Africans and we actively encourage participation from colleagues in Southern Africa.
The Society also organizes workshops and promotes the establishment of guidelines for best clinical practice in the profession.
Our advocacy role is taken seriously and our major current project is to develop a web based, parent orientated, problem based, multi-media education programme.
