Dr N vd Merwe (o/voorsitter),
Dr MJ Swart (sekretaris),
Prof H Theron,

2. Werksaamhede:
Marius J Swart
Talks: Dr Kevin Jennings (Consultant Cardiologist, Aberdeen, Scotland) presented a talk ‘Acute Coronary Syndrome: intervene early or cool down’ (February 2006). Drs. Johan Brink and Andre Saaiman presented talks on the feasibility of stem cell therapy for heart failure (June 2006).
Louis Vogelpoel Travel Scholarship: An amount of up to R15, 000 will be made available annually to a member of associate member of the SA Heart Association – Cape Town Section - to present an abstract at a national or international meeting. The award is in memory of one of our outstanding pioneer cardiologists, Dr Louis Vogelpoel. The scholarship will be awarded for the first time in 2007 after all applications have been received and reviewed by the executive committee of the Cape Western branch of the South African Heart Association. Preference will be given to practitioners or researchers in the field of cardiovascular medicine who are members of the South African Heart Association and are resident in the Western Cape (there is no separate membership list for the Cape Town branch). A written report on the relevant congress attended will need to be submitted by the successful applicant within six weeks of attending the congress. The congress report will be published in the South African Heart Association Newsletter. It was agreed that this process now actively pursued to enable first award to be made first half of 2007. Suggested that applications to be received by end of 2006.
AGM (21 February 2006): Reports by office bearers were presented. The treasurer confirmed that the balance in the account of the branch was R287,000. A membership fee to cover the expenses of the quarterly meetings was suggested for implementation next year.

During the past year the Johannesburg branch of the SAHeart has held two meetings. The first involved a debate on whether all patients with cryptogenic strokes with a patent foramen ovale should have them closed. This was an excellent meeting and was extremely well received. The second meeting had two speakers discussing the role of cardiac CT angiography. Again this meeting created a lot of debate among the attendees. The third meeting, which includes the AGM, will be held in November of this year.
The program of support, initiated 3 years ago, for cardiology trainees is continuing and has been well received. The current membership of the Johannesburg branch of SA Heart stands at 58. In addition, there are a number of associate members, who actively support the academic activities of the Johannesburg Branch of SA Heart.

PRETORIA BRANCH
The Pretoria branch is organized by myself as chairman. There are no other office bearers in the branch due to various factors. No subscriptions fees are payable - this negates the need for a treasurer and financial statements.
In the Pretoria area there are 14 cardiothoracic surgeons (not all involved in open heart surgery) and 20 cardiologists plus 2 paediatric cardiologists. Not all are members of SA Heart and 40% of these colleagues do not attend any clinical meetings.
9 Clinical meetings were held during 2006 with case discussions organized by volunteers and at times appointees. Two of these meetings were dedicated to interventional cardiology. Our monthly journal club was very poorly attended despite the high standard of discussions and the efforts of a few colleagues - and had to be suspended. We thank industry for their loyal support in facilitating these meetings.
One of our colleagues, Dr Willem van Heerden died suddenly / unexpectedly. No clear cause of death was found. His enthusiasm and contributions to our activities will be sincerely missed. Dr Roland Zeelie has taken over his practice at Montana Hospital. At our tertiary centre, Pretoria Academic Hospital, Prof Mathivha now has a new cath lab and a fellow in training. Three private cardiologists perform sessions in the cath lab at PAH.
The remuneration guidelines are regularly discussed at our meetings. The only aspect that we could agree on was a general dissatisfaction with NHPRL and the way the whole issue is managed by the funders. Although many solutions were voiced, there is no consensus (? reason). It seems this is exactly what the funders and our ministry were hoping for.
