Dear Colleagues
The Annual SA Heart Association Congress 2010 has been entitled ‘Holistic Heart Care’ The first 200 delegates to register for the congress will receive a R1000 discount courtesy of an unrestricted educational grant from Medtronic Africa. We envisage an exciting, innovative academic programme that will attempt to provide an overall cardiological perspective. The cast of invited local and international speakers is stellar; many are first time visitors and others we welcome back to our shores for repeat visits.
New academic sessions with topics not previously discussed at our Annual Congresses will be included. Women’s Day will be celebrated on the opening day of the congress and a session devoted to cardiovascular disease in women will be a highlight. A pragmatic medical ethics session is an additional innovation and one covering cardio-oncology is presented for the first time. Interventional cardiology will be an integral part of the congress. The paediatric cardiologists, cardio-thoracic surgeons, basic scientists and allied professionals will run parallel sessions. Oral abstract and poster presentations will be included.
There will be pre-congress symposia organised for the Sunday preceding the congress. Mayo clinic from Rochester, USA return for Part II of the highly successful echocardiography workshop that was run initially for the 2009 congress and there will be a cardiology update for non-cardiologists too.
An exciting social programme is planned. The ideal nature of the Sun City holiday/congress complex offers a lot for the attendee and their families. Come join us! Large discounts on congress registration are available for those who register early!
We look forward to welcoming you to the congress.
Eric Klug,

was launched by the American College of Cardiology at its annual meeting in March. It contains a wealth of information about all forms of heart disease and is easily accessible to patients and their families. Although the recommendations on the site are based on American Guidelines and may differ slightly from our own ESC-South African Guidelines, patients should find the website extremely helpful in understanding their heart disease and its treatment. Please encourage your patients to explore the website. The address is http://www.cardiosmart.org. Patients should be alerted to the fact that the quoted laboratory values are not in SI units.
